Aesthetic considerations in terms of visual and auditory ambience are also key to the game experience. the visual ambience of the game interface is leveraged to create a virtual playset, much like the western-style dinner theater experiment. by giving the users a detailed "set" and "props" or "puppets" to play with, they will more readily fall into character. the character and setting images used in the game interface are culled from 1950s 4-color advertising photographs, flat and hyper-real images that lend a puppet-like quality to the characters. see figure 3. interface design motifs remediate comic conventions, using cartoon speech and thought bubbles to represent conversation amongst a group of characters. using these conventions helps players see the distinction between what a user thinks and actually says, which gives the player the ability to choose to "lie" in a conversation. i use illustrations rather than textual dialogue to represent characters' responses to group conversations in order to both avoid syntax incoherencies which frequently occur with dynamically generated dialogue, and also to provide the user with a looser, more subjectively interpreted sense of the scene. group conversation illustrations are carefully constructed to reveal character personality and produce humor. to continue the comic cartoon motif from an illustrative strategy to the interface design itself, i used the comic sans font to give a playful feeling to button labels and text instances.
